5i and DLT drive on DL380 ?

Can someone help me to know if I can run external Compaq 20/40 DLT drives from an imbedded 5i controller on a DL380g2?

If yes, are there any drivers, firmware,etc needed to be installed?

The 5i is not being used for an array, I have a 5302 doing that...

Hi Russell,

Probably not. This is an piece from an HP customer advisory (Old, 2002). "Single-ended devices, multi-LUN Auto-loaders, and tape libraries are not supported on the Smart Array 5i or Smart Array 5i Plus Controller." The 20/40 DLT you have is SE. The 40/80 is supported as it is SE/LVD. The list below is also from the customer advisory.
If you give it a try HP would recommend downloading the latest FW for the drive and drivers from the web.

It is likely that the drive will work on the external port through the 5i controller, but you will not realize the full potential of the drive as the 5i is an Array Controller and as such, you will have limited performace with a tape drive attached.

It is suggested that you get a secondarySCSI hba. I also think you might be ble to remove the 5i and just use the onboard SCSI, but I don't know if removing the 5i disables the externl port. Since you are not using the 5i, you can safely remove it during your next downtime and test the idea. (if you want).
