ADIC Scalar 1000 and L1000 HPUX 11.x

I have an L1000 with 3 fibre channel cards. I am trying to get an ADIC Scalar 100 library w/Fibre Channel bridge to do backups. This is not a SAN config, just the point-to-point connections. There are two FC ports and 4 scsi ports on the FC bridge inside the Scalar 100. Here is the problem.

Whenever I connect the fibre cables and do an ioscan, the HP crashes and will continue to crash repeatedly until I disconnect the cables. Once the system is booted I can connect the cables and run fcmsutil /dev/fcmsX and see the connection. Status is ready.

Before purchasing the ADIC, I had an HP Galactica 6/60 attached via the FC cards and this was operational for approx 3 years.

I have applied the following patches to this 11.x box:
phss_26798
phkl_28496
phkl_23939
phkl_28216
phkl_27024

I have the jukebox attached to a scsi card right now on the L1000 and all is basically well, but that is not my desired configuration.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Brendan

Re: ADIC Scalar 1000 and L1000 HPUX 11.x

What are the models of the fc's? I.e., A5158A?

What is the fc driver version? For example, B.11.00.10 for an A5158A.

Before attaching fibre or running ioscan what does fcmsutil display?

fcmfutil /dev/td0, 1

Please attach. (* What topology please? *)

Have you swapped out old fibre with new or known good fibre?

Were the patches installed before or after these problems began?

What are there states of these patches?

swlist -l fileset -a state | grep -i -e 26798 -e 28496 -e 23939 -e 28216 -e 27024

Is the ADIC fully initialized? Able to swap tapes around OK?

Forgot to ask for information in:

/etc/shutdownlog

Any panic string?

HPMC information in /var/tombstones/ts99? Timestamps?

syslog.log?

Any ALERTs in GSP logs?

control b

Re: ADIC Scalar 1000 and L1000 HPUX 11.x

Best guess, you need to upgrade your FC cards for I believe you have the older tachyons and need the newer tachlites. Here's a possible association:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x1e741012aa92d5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html

That you can't ioscan them is a pretty good indication that they are bad. Usually ioscan will report the state of a HW device as UNCLAIMED or UNKNOWN if it???s got an issue.

Re: ADIC Scalar 1000 and L1000 HPUX 11.x

Well here is your answer:
13:53 Fri Apr 04 2003. Reboot after panic: fcpbh: Address conflicts detected
14:29 Fri Apr 4, 2003. Reboot: (by sbackup!root)
14:07 Mon Apr 07 2003. Reboot after panic: fcpbh: Address conflicts detected

The fibre card has detected a duplicat fc-al address on hte library you are attaching, and the FC cards on HP-UX are NOT able to soft change their loop addresses. hence the system panics. You need to configure/change the FC loop addressing on the 3rd party library.

Re: ADIC Scalar 1000 and L1000 HPUX 11.x

The information about the conflicts sounds like a significant problem. Here is the output of fcmsutil on the cards that are attached to the jukebox.

Local N_Port_ID is = 0x000001
N_Port Node World Wide Name = 0x1000001083B87F58
N_Port Port World Wide Name = 0x1000001083B87F58
Topology = IN_LOOP
Speed = 1062500000 (bps)
HPA of card = 0xF9EFF000
EIM of card = 0xFFFFFFFF
Driver state = READY
Number of EDB's in use = 0
Number of OIB's in use = 0
Number of Active Outbound Exchanges = 1
Number of Active Login Sessions = 2

Local N_Port_ID is = 0x000001
N_Port Node World Wide Name = 0x1000001083B935A8
N_Port Port World Wide Name = 0x1000001083B935A8
Topology = IN_LOOP
Speed = 1062500000 (bps)
HPA of card = 0xFBEFF000
EIM of card = 0xFFFFFFFF
Driver state = READY
Number of EDB's in use = 0
Number of OIB's in use = 0
Number of Active Outbound Exchanges = 1
Number of Active Login Sessions = 2

Is it possible to tell from this output what the conflict is?

Re: ADIC Scalar 1000 and L1000 HPUX 11.x

Brendan,
I agree with Melvyn. To be more precise go to library's router and configure it to work in hard addressing mode with loop-id, let's say, equal '1'. See http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x307719434a69d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

Re: ADIC Scalar 1000 and L1000 HPUX 11.x

Congratulations!! That did it. There is a place in the Java GUI to set the loop id and now it ioscans.

This gets me on my way.

Thanks for everyone's help.
