Email Subscription Notifications Suspended Temporarily

Backup Exec 9.1 and HP Surestore Autoloader 1/9

Have Backup Exec 9.1 and HP Surestore Autloader 1/9 with Windows 2003 server. Have enabled hardware compression. When server and surestore is restarted - all fine inc when going to device manager - tape drives and viewing properties - Tape drive parameters - compression capable is true and compression enabled is true. When jobs are submitted, the compression enabled changes from true to false.

I will tell you a simple logic of compression and backup:
There are 2 types of compression involved in a backup.
a) hardware compression
b) software compression
a) hardware compression : this is set on Almost all the drives by default and can be seen via stm or LTT.
Some backup softwares has the capability of disabling this hardware compression while backup and some don't.
This is because a backup process succeed's
only if one out of the above 2 compressions are used and fails/not compressed if both are enabled.

So i think your backup software is smart enough to disable one of the compression
hence you get that.
But you can check this with the amount of data copied also with backup software involved don't expect the exact compression ratio.

Have a look at this.

Also, make sure that Removable Storage Manager services is disable when utilizing 3rd party software to avoid any conflict in terms communication resources.

Work around:

1. Try to use "backup to disk" (instead of tape)and enable software compression. This will tell you if the issue is more on the software side.

2. Apply updapted veritas hot fix or service pack and driver.

3. Creat a separate test backup sets for your system file (drive C:) and datafiles (other logical drives)
