Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

We recently upgraded our tape device to a MSL2024 Tape Library, and since then we're unable to make more than one backup at the same time.
We get this error:
"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\RaidPort1"

this error has EVENT_ID 11

Details:
0000: 0f 00 18 00 01 00 68 00 ......h.
0008: 00 00 00 00 0b 00 04 c0 .......À

0038: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

I browsed some sites, and found the problem could be the storeport driver, but after a check in the register, I found out we don't use this driver.
All our hardware, software(symantec backupexec, win 2K3SP2) and drivers are at the latest versions.
HP L&TT test succeeded.
We use a HP smartarray P800 controller.

The P800 controller is used for the disks, for the Tape Library we use a HP SC44Ge HBA. Anyone had problems like this?

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

Please change the HBA to HP Ultra320 SCSI...or SC44Ge HBA..

Smary array controllers doesnt support LUN Scanning feature...As you might be aware that MSL2024 is a G2 Tape Library, it needs LUN Scanning feature..

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

The msl2024 is connected to a sg44ge controller
the external ultrium lto III sas tape unit is connected to the p800 controller
we have the problem with both units
we tested it with only one drive and still the same problem
i installed windows 2008 on the server and we had the same lsi_sas errors
i upgraded the storport with the driver of the hot fix KB953390
storport 6.0.6001.22232 and the backup is running ok
we are reinstalling the system with windows 2003 a we will test it with the storport

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

Similar problem for me again with the SC44ge SAS card. Seems to be plenty of other people having the same issues.

Please HP can you figure out what is causing this, its giving HP a *very* bad reputation within my organisation. Have had every driver and firmware\BIOS patched and drives and SAS cards and cables swapped out by support.

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

A problem has been identified with the SC44Ge and the MSL2024/4048 libraries with LTO-3 SAS drives in a very small number of configurations. We have been able to resolve the issue with a drive firmware change. New firmware was approved today for open escalations working with HP support and will be posted as soon as testing is complete. The revision is C25W. A full test cycle takes several weeks so the final release won't be for a few weeks yet.

Curtis

Is the same problem evident with SC44Ge connecting to a StorageWorks 1760 SAS drive?

I am receiving "driver detected a controller error on \Device\RaidPort1"

SC44Ge Bios 6.18.5.0, Firmware 1.20.33.0, Driver 1.28.2.1

StorageWorks 1760 Firmware U29D

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

The problem is less likely but is possible on a standalone 1760 connected to an SC44Ge controller. The drive firmware for standalone drives is U52D and should be available next week. It's in the final stages of the release process.

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

Curtis

I have this problem constantly. I have two servers in this configuration and they both fail with "Windows NT SCSI port" errors whenever I try and run a backup.

I have downgraded the SG44Ge driver to StorPort version 1.24.4.0 and have so far managed to backup 62GB.

Fingers crossed.

BTW backup add is ARCserve r12.0 SP2 (Build 5611)

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

The standalone firmware is now released and available at hp.com. The library firmware is almost out.

Downgrading the HBA firmware seems to be very effective at resolving the issue if there isn't something you need in the newer firmware. We didn't investigate in depth to see what was different with the earlier firmware but instead worked to tolerate the behavior in the newer firmware.

I would be interested in long term results of the firmware downgrade.

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

Is the firmware for HP StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1760 Tape Drive?

I see U29D still listed on drivers and software pages.

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

U52D should be the firmware listed on the drivers and updates page for standalone drives. I selected the 1760 SAS standalone tape drive and Windows 2K3 64 bit and got the firmware download link. I don't know if the link I used will work - some of the URLs are dynamic and don't copy/past well.

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

I was expecting the firmware for use with LLT to change version.

I'll try this download today as my backups are failing again with the same symptoms.

Any news on this problem. It looks like this error is getting more and more standard at customers.

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

I've had a call logged with HP about my issue. Not heard anything for a couple of days now and I still can't backup my servers!

Last notification from HP was "Our apologies, we have not been successful in reaching you, I just wanted
to let you know Our Tape Storage team is following up on your case:
4603126563, issue with the HP StorageWorks 1760 tape drive attached to the
SC44Ge controller card."

Not sure if this means they are working on it.

Re: Backup error witdh DL320 and MSL2024

All occurances of this issue should be resolved with the latest controller and tape drive firmware. If somebody feels they are having a similar issue they need to post to a new thread. The only issues I have seen not fixed by the firmware were a bad cable or a poor cable connection.

If the drive has not updated correctly with the new drive firmware there are a lot of methods for updating drive firmware. Unloading the tape and using L&TT is my preferred method. The drive must report the correct firmware revision.
