Backwards compatibility of 35/70 tapes

I know that DLT III/IV/V tapes can be re-used in 40/80 but can backup sessions recorded on old 35/70 models be replayed on the newer 40/80 models?

I see that Compaq have stopped shipping 35/70 drives. When did this happen?
