The 1557A and the 1554A are the same drive, I believe.

Not exactly same...
C1554A is a DDS 3 Trade Ready drive i.e. it's not a SureStore. C1557A is SCSI inquiry string for DDS3 autoloader.

Erm, as far as the drive goes, should. If you're using NTbackup. Backup SW should have it's own drivers in which case you shouldn't load tape drivers to the OS.
As for autoloader function... I don't think any of native OS backup solutions can utilize autoloader. That means you need to load every tape manually.
