CPQKGPSA Error EventID: 15 ltotape error EventID: 11

Our backup system environment is composed of
DL360 G2 (we have just updated to Windows 2003 Standard Edition from Windows 2000 Server ) server, SAN environment (Compaq SAN switch 16, Compaq Modular Data Router), and StorageTekL40 (with 3 Seagate LTO1 tape drives (drive#2, drive#3, drive#4). The backup server is using FC HBA adapter to access the StorageTekL40 library. Networker 7.1.3 is used as the backup software.

After upgrading to Windows 2003 STD, we experienced the errors below, and some times tapes were stacked in the drive, and we could not unmount the tape from the drive using the backup software (Networker commands). In this case, what we could do is open the StorageTekL40 and manually pull out the tape of the drive.

Rebooting all the systems (tape libray, the backup server, MDR) could recover the backup system a little bit. But after 1 or 2 days, we would experience the same errors again.

Anybody expereinced similar errors?
Any clues or solutions will be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Hi

Suggeat following:

1. Download latest driver for the Library for Windows 2003 and update the driver

2. Check Backup software compatibilty for Win 2000 & Win 2003

3. You may need to apply latest Service Pack and pathes for the backup software

Re: CPQKGPSA Error EventID: 15 ltotape error EventID: 11

The problem is not yet solved.
I just tried to update the seagate tape device drivers. But, I still got similar errors.

I am currently using DS-KGPSA-CY (Emulex LP8000 series) as the FC HBA card with
"Driver Provider: Compaq Driver Date: 2003/05/13 Driver Version: 5.4.82.16" as the driver. I tried to update the driver to a newer one but failed since newer drivers don't support EMA arrays (HSG controllers),
which are also in our SAN environment.

My next step is trying to use another FC HBA card.

By the way, I came across the following article at Microsoft KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;895573
It gives same EventIDs (EventID 15 & 11).
But, I am not sure if this has something to do with the issues we have.

And, may be you already do it:
be sure in the registery for the KGPSA you have the following keys: Topology=1 and resetTPRLO=2

What's the firmware release of your HBA CPQKGPSA?

You have a quite recent Windows driver for that board, but some version of driver need a minimum firmware release.

This is likely to be Windows RSM kicking in again. Even if this was disabled in 2000, the upgrade will re-enable it (or at least, the admins involved in that upgrade told me they didn't change any settings). This needs to be switched off to ensure that NetWorker has sole control of the library and drives.

You may also be able to find if another piece of software has grabbed these devices using http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Handle.html
A sysadmin should never cross his fingers in the hope commands will work. Makes for a lot of mistakes while typing.
