Can't eject tape

I placed a brand new tape in this drive and it appears to be stuck in an endless loop now. Sounds like it is rewinding, then fast forwarding, then rewinding ... I've tried ejecting, powering off, removing all cabling, powered off overnight. Tape just starts to do the same thing as soon as it's powered back on again. Drive as well is a brand new Compaq SDLT 110/220, but has used about 7-8 tapes already without issue. Anyone have any other ideas?
