Can't get DLT 15/30 to work

I have an HP 9000/735 which suffered a root disk crash recently. After installing a new HP-UX 11.0 system, I cannot restore the backed up data from the DLT 15/30 which had previously backed up and restored data quite happily.

When I try to list the tape:
/etc/frecover -x -N -v -f /dev/rmt/c0t4d0BEST

I get:
Unable to open or identify device at /dev/rmt/c0t4d0BEST

ioscan shows the tape to be present and I have tried creating new device files for it.

Any ideas?

The backup was in tar format!!
