Compatibility between DLT 7000 1/8 and DLT 4000 1/15

Dear all,

We have One DLT 7000 1/18 library and Two DLT 4000 1/15 library.

All the DLt's are connected to HP K-Class servers running with 11.0 and SAP r/3

We are using SAP BRBACKUP for taking our backup.

Problem:--

DLT Media DLT IV written in 7000 is not getting read in 4000. This was working for nearly 3 months for the past one week we are facing this problem.

Is there any settings at 7000 end to be done.

TIA

regards

Maybe something in the software changed. From your comments I take it that this used to work. This implies that the DLT7k drives have been forced into writing DLT4k compatible mode which basically is a different density (thus data on tape)

I would verify that the DLT is still writing the tapes in this mode.

Hope this helps

One way that this problem could occur is if the DLT-7000 is writing brand new tapes, rather than tapes that have been previously written by a DLT-4000.

By default, the DLT-7000 will write a new tape in the highest density mode, which can not be read by a DLT-4000.

The DLT 7000 drive could be write in two different mode.
DLT 7000 mode and DLT 4000 mode.
The DLT 7000 mode would be use with new tapes. It is not possible to read this format in a DLT 400 drive.
The DLT 4000 mode would be use if the tape are used before in DLT 4000 drive. So the header of the tape show a DLT 4000 signure on the tape. So the DLT 7000 drive switch to DLT 4000 mode.

DLT 7000 media cannot be backwards compatible to DLT 4000 The density is different.
A DLTt4000 tape can be read in a DLT7000. We have had problems and understand it is impossible to read a DLT7000 on an DLT4000.
We had many problems converting tapes back and forth, until we created seperate pools of media for each DLT..

I did forget that if the atpe is orginally written in a DLT4000, then used in a 7000, the DLT7000 front panel should show the 20GB/Compressed, if so, the tape may be wriitten in a 4000 mode.

If you wish to write tape in 4000 format in DLT7000 drive you should use device drivers with 'h' letter (for example, /dev/rmt/0h and /dev/rmt/0hn) in brbackup parameters file(init.sap). For 7000 density use 'u' drivers.
