DAT 40x6e on OpenBSD

I'm trying to get my DAT 40x6e to work with an OpenBSD 3.3 install. Anyone have this device working on any BSD on Linux?

dmesg reports the drive:
-
st0 at scsibus2 targ 5 lun 0: SCSI2 1/sequential
removable
st0: density code 0x26, variable blocks, write-enabled
ch0 at scsibus2 targ 5 lun 1: SCSI2 8/changer removable
-
The command mt status returns:
SCSI tape drive, residual=0
ds=3
er=0
blocksize: 0 (0, 0, 0, 0)
density: 38 (0, 0, 0, 0)
-
but mt erase or trying to dump to tape results in:
