DAT24 drive errors
Will cleaning the unit eliviate these symptoms or is this an indication of a mechanical problem?
Thanks for your time,

Re: DAT24 drive errors
2 things you can try. Run the cleaning tape 5 times. Open Library and Tape Tools, Select Utilities and run script. Browse for the file ddswriterecal.ssc. Put a check in the box and run this script on your tape drive. you will need a new tape. Good Luck.

Re: DAT24 drive errors
Another cause for not ejecting the tape is that the tape is reserved by the Bu Sw, in fact if the backup could not be finished, the Sw lock the tape so it cannot be ejected automaticaly, and you have to make a Force eject.
check the BU. Sw logs to see if this is the problem.

Re: DAT24 drive errors
I've since cleaned the tape unit and the tape still doesn't want to eject. When inserting a tape into the unit it says that the tape is bad, even if it is known good.
The grinding noise mentioned in the previous post still occurs when the tapes are being read by the tape unit. The LTT software says the tapes have all "0" values for reads/writes etc...
So what should I try next? I suspect hardware failure.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: DAT24 drive errors
a little test... not sure it may help, but worth trying. Power off drive, disconnect it from SCSI bus (disconnect everything from the back - I mean terminator(s)), then power it on back. Try inserting/removing tapes, listen to noises. If drive will behave the same way I would suspect the drive - try to figure out what happened before drive started behaving this way (firmware upgraded, damaged tape inserted, driver upgraded, etc). If it will be ejecting fine without noises then maybe problem is somewhere on the bus (adapter, another SCSI device, terminator, SCSI card driver etc)
