For the records:

It depends on your defination of "old DLT" and "newer generation" drives. The latest drive is the SDLT600, and it will not read DLT40/70/80 tapes (only SDLT 220, SDLT320, and VS160).

SDLT600 = 300GB at 36MB/s native.
Ultrium960 = 400GB at 80MB/s native.

both transfer rates (and capacities) double at 2:1 compression.

Not sure if that's serious competition or not.
