DLT80e I/O error

Hi

I just buy the SureStore DLT80e for the Kclass with HPUX10.20

Since the DLT80e supprt LVD/SE, so i connect it to the 28655A HP-PB SCSI adapter.

ext_bus 1 10/4/8 scsi1 CLAIMED INTERFACE HP 28655A - SE SCSI ID=7

The system auto detect the driver and the ioscan -fnC tape:

tape 1 10/4/8.1.0 tape2 CLAIMED DEVICE QUANTUM DLT8000
/dev/diag/rmt/c1t1d0 /dev/rmt/c1t1d0BEST
/dev/rmt/1m /dev/rmt/c1t1d0BESTb
/dev/rmt/1mb /dev/rmt/c1t1d0BESTn
/dev/rmt/1mn /dev/rmt/c1t1d0BESTnb

However i can use the driver..
# mt -t /dev/rmt/1mn status
/dev/rmt/1mn: I/O error
# mt -t /dev/rmt/1mn rew
/dev/rmt/1mn: I/O error
# tar cvf /dev/rmt/1mn /etc
tar: cannot open /dev/rmt/1mn

Thanks

Re: DLT80e I/O error

Hello,

Ok, you are trying to use the DLT80e on a SE SCSI card, since it is LVD/SE.

But no, DLT80e can run well only on LVD speed (in your case). The 28655 can NEVER allow your DLT80e to perform to its necessary speeds, hence your errors.

In order to use your DLT80e, you should change it. the K-Class supports only HVD connections, not LVD. And no 28696 cards here... you need the A2969A for it to work.

Re: DLT80e I/O error

Check that SCSI bus is ok - cable is good and terminator is in place. Try another tape cartridge. Check drive's firmware and upgrade if necessary http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/ltt/index.html
Also please check for pathes installed. Look at this one http://www.software.hp.com/SUPPORT_PLUS/docs/XSW800GR1020.html . Latest and last is Dec 2001 (check with 'swlist -l bundle')

Re: DLT80e I/O error

A2969A is FWD (HVD) HSC SCSI adapter, thus it can not be used to connect LVD/SE devices. Direct connect of LVD devices is not supported by K-class. If you'll not succeed to connect DLT80e to the server in SE mode, then try HVD-LVD bus convertors from http://www.paralan.com
For K-class you would better buy DLT8000 drive/assy with HVD SCSI interface...

Re: DLT80e I/O error

Hi,
There is something wrong with your configuration, the vs80 should use the stape driver, not the tape2 (it is a DDS driver).
Check the User guide how to create device files for vs80 on HP-UX:
http://h200005.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/lpg29152/lpg29152.pdf

It may also be an idea to install the latest hardware patches.

I would try this before buying a new drive or HBA.

Re: DLT80e I/O error

Leif,
VS80 drive is actially Benchmark DLT1 tape drive, although Reymond bought DLT80e (DLT8000 drive).
Tape2 driver is ok for HP-PB cards connected devices. Stape driver is used when connecting to HSC and PCI SCSI cards

Re: DLT80e I/O error

Eugeny,

I have install all the latest patch but still not work.

Now, i connect the DLT to a 700 workstation and everyting work fine.

i will keep this config and backup k-class data over network.

thanks

Re: DLT80e I/O error

Very good. Then I suspect that HP-PB 28655A SCSI card is a cause. Either it's faulty or is not compatible with this LVD/SE drive (not supported for sure)
