Data Protector and OpenVMS 7.3-2

One of my sites running a standalone DS25 wants to switch from ABS to DataProtector across the SAN. I've never used DP but I'm wondering about using Native VMS backup commands - do they work on these tapes? If the system is down, can I recovery data using minimal-boot commands?

Any words of wisdom from other DP users.
