Data error cyclic redundancy check using Backup Exec 8.5

Several of our customers have Windows NT Server 4.0 SP6 with Backup Exec 8.5 running on a HP NetServer LH3 with an internal HP SureStore DAT24i connected separately to the Symbios SCSI controller. We have set the SCSI configuration to a maximum of 20 Mb/s.
We have used the latest Library and Tapetools (ltt_27_eng.exe) for testing the drive.
The tapes are not older than 4 months. We keep on getting these error messages as shown below and have not been able to solve the problem to our satisfaction.

Storage device "HP 2" reported an error on a request to read data from media.

Error reported:
Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

I think that's a standard BE message indicating the drive had a hard read/write error.

Can you run the device analysis test in L&TT and see what it says?

The device analysis is also included in the support ticket. Under the file menu in the support ticket viewer, you could generate an html report, and then cut the device analysis section out and post it for us to review, or you could post the whole support ticket (.ltt file) if you wanted.

Eldata,

Thanks for posting the support ticket. Unfortunately it looks like it was truncated (perhaps by the ITRC). Could you email the .ltt file to ltt_team@hp.com, and we can look at it for you.

Re: Data error cyclic redundancy check using Backup Exec 8.5

Thanks for emailing us the support ticket. The device analysis section says:

Device Analysis for DDS Drives
* Product ID is 'C1537A'
* Your drive may be exceeding its Duty Cycle specification. The drive is designed to read or write for no more than 5 hours per day.
* Please insert a cleaning cartridge 5 times in a row to ensure that the drive heads are clean.
* Your drive may require re-calibration. If you are still having problems please contact support for details on how to recalibrate your drive.

- - -

Don't worry about the duty cycle warning - you were only a fraction of a percent over the specification.

From the error log, it suggests that you clean the drive 5 times in a row. Normally you should be cleaning your drive every 5th tape or so.

If cleaning doesn't clear up the problem, then HP support may suggest recalibrating the drive.
The journey IS the reward.

I found this document:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg51097.html

As you can see, cleaning 5 times in a row is at the top of the list.

John
