Drive problem with SSL 2020

This unit when powered on takes inventory of the tapes (reads bar codes correctly). When a tape is placed in one of the two drives the error is (UNRECONGIZABLE TAPE). Firmware is up to date, AIT tapes are good .... Will not recognize a cleaning tape ... Any ideas of what to try ....

Unit is attached to a Proliant DL380 G2 - Windows 2000 Server - Backup Exec 8.6
