ESL712e Partitioning

Has anyone ever successfully partitioned an HP ESL712e? I am migrating away from Data Protector would like to share the library with the new software. My goal is to have the new software use 9 tape drives and most of the slots. Data Protector will have access to 1 tape drive and possibly several slots for restores. Is this is a huge pain to do? Are there any caveats that I need to look out for?
