HP 9144A tape drive
is there online any technical documentation for the HP 9144A tape drive. I´d try to install HP-UX 7.03 on an old 400s workstation for education.
Many thanks

Re: HP 9144A tape drive
The drive offers a read-while-write feature, Media Monitor, and extensive error detection and correction capabilities. It is format compatible with the 35401A and 7911/12/14/42/46 integrated cartridge subsystems. The drive is supported on the following HP systems. HP 3000 Series 37, 28, 40/42, 44/48, 52, 58, 64, 68, 70, HP 1000 A Series, HP 9000 Series 200, 300, 500, and HP Touchscreen PC (150B), Touchscreen II (150C).

Re: HP 9144A tape drive
is it definatley a 400 series tape you have?
if it is then boot up the box and press escape to stop the boot process and then you will have to enter the boot path of the tape drive.
Bear in mind these are old boxes and drives now so before you put the cartridge in open the flap and have alook at the capstand to make sure it isnt falling to bits( the rubber wheel) as if it is it will just run the tape off.
These tape drives take quite a while to load aswell so just leave it until its ready before you send the command to boot.

Re: HP 9144A tape drive
thank you for answering. Boot path means the two characters (2H hp-ux) from the 'searching for system mode'? -> will cause an read error. Is there an other way to boot?
An older version 5.1 do not longer boot from tape,'cause of memory is to large!.
A version HP-UX 8.0 (on CD) stopps booting with the message 'rootmount can not mount root ... no dump device' [...] halted.
How can I install a HP-UX on the 400s?

Re: HP 9144A tape drive
On the cd it will say 400's 700's or 800's?
The hardware was specific to the systems back when these were built.
If it doesnt say 400's on the cd then it probably wont work

Re: HP 9144A tape drive
meanwhile I think the 400s has a wrong
HP-IB card (A3026-01681) and I can´t install without errors from tape;
certainly there is exactly only one matching the unit. (9914A controller is in all systems the same). How can I clean the sensor?
The CDs says '...series 300/400 June 1991'.
May be it wont match, too; next version is to put an dd-image from the cd on a scratch and try to boot from therelike BSD did[McKusick1993].
