HP DDS-1 tapes - early failures?

We just ran into a serious problem - we bought several boxes of HP DDS-1 tapes (C5706A) and they seem to fail much earlier then my Sony tapes.

13 of the tapes failed with I/O faults within 20 passes, and a few tapes fail on the first pass.

The tapes are stamped with some sort of code -
90 k114 3v33.

Is this a common problem with this "date code"?
