HP StorageWorks DAT 72 Alert message

Received the following message:  "Insert media into device Dev-5.0.3.0: HP C7438A or The magazine containing media into the loader for job Daily Backup".  I insert the Dat 72GB  (C8010A) cartridge and receive the repeated message and then the machine terminates the daily backup.  Other times i get a message "improper media".  Can anyone help resolve my problem?
