HPE Ultrium 6250 Is showing up 2 times in device manager

Hi all,

I recently noticed that my HPE Ultrium 6250 tape drive is showing up 2 times in device manager.  I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it with no luck, it seems to want to show up twice but I am thinking this is causing me issues with my backup software occasionally detecting and not detecting the tapes in my tape drive.  Anyone else expirencing the same thing?  I am using 2016 server essentials.

Re: HPE Ultrium 6250 Is showing up 2 times in device manager

What HBA are you using and what is the firmware version of that HBA?

There was a firmware version for some HBAs that incorrectly created two OS connections for every tape drive.  That firmware has been fixed and the release updated for some time, probably a couple of years, but we periodically find HBAs still running one of the versions with the issue.

The core firmware runs on several different HBAs with slightly different firmware revisions so I would have to know what HBA you have before I could check whether the firmware might have this issue.

What would be the best way to check for the HBA on my system?  I will get the information today and post back on this topic..

Re: HPE Ultrium 6250 Is showing up 2 times in device manager

You can usually at least look up the HBA model and driver version in the "System Information" tool under Components -> Storage -> SCSI.

Reading the firmware revision from the HBA tends to be harder, sometimes there is an HBA specific tool that can read it or you can view it on the option ROM screen during boot.

If you have a ProLiant server and a ProLiant Support Pack installed the web GUI for that tool is good at showing the firmware revisions of everything.

I have added the componet information below I am currently using a HP Proliant 180 Gen9 Server.  I wonder if i can find the HBA specific tool.

Re: HPE Ultrium 6250 Is showing up 2 times in device manager

The H241 is one of the controllers that has the dual tape drive reporting problem.  With that controller version 4.52 is known to have the problem you describe.  The last I looked 6.30 was current.

Re: HPE Ultrium 6250 Is showing up 2 times in device manager

I appreciate the help in resolving this.  I am looking for drivers now for the HBA 241 controller.

Re: HPE Ultrium 6250 Is showing up 2 times in device manager

Updating the drivers is always a good idea but if you have an H241 controller firmware version that has the defect for presenting tape drives twice you need to update the firmware, not the drivers.

This link hopefully will take you right to the firmware download for windows:

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=null&swItemId=MTX_2273a53e9d7b4a52b3888bc8be&swEnvOid=4184

If that doesn't work it is a quick find by going to http://www.hpe.com/support/ then search for the H241, select "drivers and downloads", then change the sort order to "date" and find the most recent firmware.  For some odd reason that page defaults to sorting by "relavance" which doesn't seem to do anything useful.
