I'm using Retrospect 7.5 to do a backup of my Small Business Server. This week my total backup size passed the 200gb threshold, and it's asking for a second tape to complete the backup.
I'm using 400gb tapes (HP Ultrium LTO2 C7972A), so I should be able to get this backup on one tape. I have disabled encryption, and the backup is still not being compressed.
When I right click on my tape drive in Device Manager and view it's properties, "Compression Enabled" is set to false under the "Tape Drive Parameters" tab. This is a grayed out dropdown that I can't change. How do I change this so compression is enabled?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: How to Enable compression on Ultrium 448?
Usualy the compression enable/disable is managed by the backup application.
check in retrospect where you can select HW or SW compession

Solution
It may be that Retrospect is turning compression off so even if you turn it back on again, it'll be turned off as soon as you start your next backup. The wording can be confusing because the app may be referring to software compression(which must be off) rather than hardware compression (within the device - which should be on).
You can check the state of the device with HP's LTT tool. It's free from the web - www.hp.com/support/tapetools. There's a 'health' icon you can use (LTO only) that will pull a 'support ticket' and you can see the drive configuration information from there. Compression should be enabled.
If you pull the ticket after the backup you'll also be able to see what the drive's compression ratio is (as well as a few other things).
The simplest way of turning hardware compression back on is to power cycle the drive. However, if the Retrospect is turning it off you will still have a problem. Best check the documentation on that one to make sure you've got the settings right.
Hope there are some pointers there. Good luck.
Richard (HP LTT team).

It's more interesting when it's gone wrong

Re: How to Enable compression on Ultrium 448?
Thanks for the tips. I was pretty sure that it was the backup software that was disabling compression, but I just wanted to make sure. The diagnostic tools successfully write compressed data, and I think I've found a setting in Retrospect that was disabling the compression. I've fixed that problem for tonight's backup, hopefully it all goes smooth! Thanks again for the replies.
