Hello Pentium... are you P4 or still P3? just joking...
All drives shipped by HP have hardware compression enabled by drive's bottom switches. The rule is if you have compression ratio 2:1 then you can store 24G on the DDS3 tape, if you have no compression - 1:1 - then only 12G. But please make sure you have compression turned on only in one location - at hardware level (you can see it in the LTT report for drive - http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50128.html ) or at software level (packed files, backup utility's compression etc)
