How to test LTO1 drive when library tape tools analysis fails on all drives in library?

I am wondering if it is a problem with the LTO-1 drives for the HP Surestore 20/700 in particular or something with LTT but every drive I test with the LTO Drive Assessment test fails. It does not matter if it is connected via direct SCSI or via the FC 2/1 Fiber to SCSI bridge. In the case of the 2/1 bridge, it generates a "Bus Activity Timeout(HTH)! BUS 0 HUNG! r = 0xa0762380, dsp = 0x880046f4, scntl0 = 0xca, dbc = 0x878b0000 " message while writing wrap 4.

I have direct connected the bare drives to a Linux, Windows 2k3, and HP9000 server but none of the drives seem to pass the test.

Read/Write tests pass but when put back into the backup environment on the SAN the tested drives start having the same problems again.

It the problem with how LTT works or something with this particular drive type?

Here is the requested support ticket as generated from LTT. The errors from the Surestore 2/1 Fiber to SCSI bridge during the last test run are:

Re: How to test LTO1 drive when library tape tools analysis fails on all drives in library?

Hi James,

did you have a look into this ticket?

'st_san_safe' system parameter is turned off
The stape driver will allow access to device special file without the 'no-rewind-on-close' option also.
This might disrupt the backup as one system can send the rewind command on close while the other system is still backing up the data'st_ats_enabled' system parameter is turned off

This is very likely the reason already.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: How to test LTO1 drive when library tape tools analysis fails on all drives in library?

I would see that would be a possible option for the problem here but the LTT tool fails also when direct connectd to Linux or when run on Windows over the SAN.

This is an existing backup solution that has been in place of 8 years now. I am trying to run LTT to diagnose 1 of 20 tape drives that seem to be having issues but it always seems to bomb on these drives no matter the platform. I am trying to see if it is just this set of drives or soemthing more nefarious is going on here.
