Informix ontape with ultrium 230e
Recently we added an Ultrium 230e on N4000 server with HP-UX 11.00. We plan to backup a database which is Informix IDS 7.31 FC4 (64 bits)using the Ultrium and the Informix's ontape program. The Ultrium's theory says that the streaming backup time reduces 6 times the backup time versus a DLT8000. For us that is not true because we reduce the time from 8 hrs to 6 hrs. Somebody has the similar issue? If you have the same implementation (ID-Ultrium-ontape) What did you do to reduce the backup time. Any help will be good. thank You.

Hi,
DLT8000/Omniback/onbar
We use onbar in conjunction with Omniback
and get a very good throughput. For example
we backup a 50Gb database (logical size)
in less than 30 minutes onto the one tape.
Using OmniBack you can also reduce this
amount of time again by using 'dynamic'
devices, meaning backing up across multiple
devices within the same backup.
Food for thought!

What do you mean "Logical Size"?
How did you configured the Informix database tape (in the onconfig file)?
Did you backed up raw or cooked database?
I will apreciatte your help.

What I mean by logical size is this. The
database may have 50 Gb allocated to it
in real terms (LVM partitions) but may have only say 25-30Gb actual data....
We use raw partitions with Informix.
Below is the output from one of our OmniBack
'barlists' which run a database backup.
# more INF_DB_Daily
BARLIST "INF_DB_Daily"
OWNER root informix systema
GROUP "systema"
DEVICE "SYSTEMA DLT 1"
{
-sync
-pool "DLT Full Backup"
-restype "B CD MR ND R"
}
CLIENT "onlinetcp_inf" systema
{
-exec ob2onbar.exe
-args {
"-b"
"-w"
}
-no_profile
} -protect days 28

to backup the database. If you are doing a
restore onbar is the preferred method as
you have more control, especially when
rolling forward with logs. Of course you can
restore directly from OmniBack.
