Internal vs. External Disks?

Is there anyway to tell when running ioscan -fn (or someother command) which scsi disks are internal and which are in an array? Thanks! Further, is there anyway to tell what kind of array is attached? (ie. Jamaica, etc).

Re: Internal vs. External Disks?

You could tell by looking at the SCSI path for each device.

Since you don't say what type of machine, I can't tell you the internal paths.

As far as telling the type of array, you should be able to tell from the description part of ioscan.

For example, LUNs from a VA7400 show up with a description of "HP A6189A". Other arrays should show up appropriately.

Re: Internal vs. External Disks?

As mentioned, the string in the ioscan output will tell you the type of array in most cases (VA, XP, EVA, ...). Disks in a jamaica for instance are only shown as disks - no hint about the chassis.

For the internal disks, you need to know your hardware well. The manual (usually the installation manual) will tell you the internal hardware pathes.

If you need help, you should post an ioscan and the type of your server.

Hope this helps!

Re: Internal vs. External Disks?

On older servers like D,K,L,N Classes the hardware path for the internal disks is written on the chassis.
Take a look (if you have one of these) and compare.

Hope this helps!

Re: Internal vs. External Disks?

Thanks. All of the boxes are K580s. For instance, I know that this box has 5 Seagate disks: 1 x 4GB disk, 2 x 9GB disks and 2 x 18GB disks. But can not determine which are internal and which are in the array. Can you tell from its ioscan that I have attached?

Re: Internal vs. External Disks?

The internal disks are connected to the path 10/0, so your disks

10/0.3
10/0.5
10/0.6

are internal.

The path 8/4 is the HSC expansion card with an SCSI FW controller installed. You have 2 external disks installed on this bus.

If you take a look at the backside of your server, there should be a nice sticker on the power supply telling you the pathes.

Hope this helps!
