It appears that you are using media in this drive that will not give you the optimal performance...
What conditions are present in LLT software to cause this diagnostic message to be produced?
I'm not looking for potential media issues that might lead to this.
I need to know what condition the LLT software has detected that causes the advice to be produced.

Shalom Ray,
I've seen this under two circumstances:
1) Using media that did not quite meet specifications.
2) Using non-hp media in hp tape drives.
If its the later, its probably nothing to worry about. If its the former, I would not rely on backups made on this media.

I have seen this message only when you are using tapes from a previous generation that the drive
for example, DDS3 tapes in DDS4 drive
If you have the LTT sticket we can give more info

Re: It appears that you are using media in this drive that will not give you the optimal performance...
Thanks to those who posted comments regarding the circumstances in which they have seen this - notably the use of non-HP media.
What I really wanted to know was the specific program conditions within the LLT software that makes the software give the diagnostic.
For example, suppose the LLT can control analogue the record level or read the analogue replay level. These values might indicate the magnetic properties of the tape - the coercivity and remanence.
In the hypothetical example above, testing the analoge replay levels for various analogue record levels could determine the tape's magnetic properties.
Perhaps LLT makes this report on the basis of the percantage of incorrect bits in the test data.
Maybe the LLT does a very fast forward wind to measure the tape length.
I would just like to know what the LLT uses to generate this message
