L&TT on DLT8000: The drive failed the error-rate

hi,

since 3 weeks the backup with our DLT 8000 is extrem slow.

The L&TT: DLT acceptance test with an new tape results in:
Total rewrites (1421) exceeded threshold value (1290)- loop 33 (error-rate)
Total correctable write errors (1421) exceeded threshold value (1290)- loop 33 (error-rate)
==> The drive failed the error-rate test.

I've tried this test three times with a different tape but the same result.

Any Suggestions?

Re: L&TT on DLT8000: The drive failed the error-rate

No one has an answer?

Maybe my question was not clear enough:
What does it mean, if the L&TT error-rate test fails? Do I have to change the HP DLT drive?

regards

Try with a new cartridge once again.
Than change your DLT drive

hi,

have you updated the latest firmware for this DLT?

please refer to :

as I do not know the model of your server and also the platform version.

Re: L&TT on DLT8000: The drive failed the error-rate

Hi blairono, hi joseph,

thank you for answering.

@blairono
The test failed again with a brand new HP tape.

@joseph
Firmware ist up to date. Look at the
attached .ltt file of my first posting:
Firmware rev 'V088' is up-to-date for 'DLT8000' as of Thu Mar 18 20\:00\:00 2004.:1252:0
I use a HP SureStore DLT 80 with an Win2000 machine.

Just another point to carify:
During a backup with veritas BE the drive starts and stops again and again. Is this a result of the soft error rate? Or is it vice versa: Because of some other problems (scsi?) the drive starts and stops which raise the error rate.

Re: L&TT on DLT8000: The drive failed the error-rate

from the attachment you sent, there is a line which attributed to the tape drive:

10:4:4:40:3:3:42:1:1:PlainText:The test failed for something that could be attributed to the test tape. If you get this message again after retrying the test with a different NEW tape, there may be a problem with the drive. Press ENTER to continue.:1252:0

do you still have support for the autoloader?

Re: L&TT on DLT8000: The drive failed the error-rate

The LTT test results indicate that the drive is having a high soft error rate. This can be caused by a dirty head, or more often by a worn head. How many tape motion hours does the drive have?

If you can generate a support ticket (support tool -> save ticket to file), and then post the .ltt file here, I can review all the drive logs and give you my thoughts.
The journey IS the reward.
