LTO1 (C7420A) and L&TT 3.5SR3 problems

Hi
Sorry if this is the wrong forum for L&TT and drive issues.

While testing the LTO1 on a W98SE system, we run the LTO Drive Assessment Test in L&TT 3.5 SR3 as a matter of course.
With the SCSI cable terminated, latest firmware in the Adaptec 2940 card (2.20) the test always fails the drive on insertion of the tape (HP C7971A tape) at the beginning of the test.
Looking at the operations log it states:
"SCSI script: invalid buffer offset (line 1676) Error out of range on buffer data"

Without changing any drive connections, setups etc, I uninstalled L&TT 3.5SR3 and loaded 3.5SR2 The drive passes the LTO Drive Assessment Test (same tape, same cables, termination etc.) Thus the drive is good.
Reloading SR3 again the drive 'fails' the LTO Drive Assessment Test

Is this a quirk of SR3?
The support ticket is too large to be attached.
Cheers
Barry.

Sounds like a definite problem in SR3 to me. They've set a buffer limit within SR3 which your drive is breaking.
A sysadmin should never cross his fingers in the hope commands will work. Makes for a lot of mistakes while typing.

Barry,

This is a good place to report this issue. Actually a better place is the ltt_team@hp.com mailbox.

The description sounds like there is a problem with the script, and not an issue with your drive. It may be a combination of your OS and HBA (both pretty old) that causes a change in SR3 to break.

The best way to help the LTT team resolve it would be to restart LTT SR3, go to options/preferences and turn on I/O history, rerun the test, exit the tool, and then mail the file "event_log.ltt" from the logs subfolder along with the problem description to ltt_team@hp.com.

Re: LTO1 (C7420A) and L&TT 3.5SR3 problems

Barry,

We were able to duplicate this on Win98, and at least understand some of the conditions of the failure. You need to be using the ASPI driver mode (which in win98 is all you have) for this problem to occur. On OS platforms that support the NT miniport driver (e.g. NT, 2000, XP), the problem doesn't occur. So it has something to do with SR3 changes and the ASPI driver.

Thanks for reporting the problem. No need to send in your logs to the ltt_team.

Re: LTO1 (C7420A) and L&TT 3.5SR3 problems

Just for closure, we found that the drive assessment test in SR3 was changed to capture two additional bytes of sense data (bytes 16 & 17), but these are not returned when the ASPI driver is used and therefore causes the script to generate the "out of range" error message. We will address this in the next release of LTT.

David,
Thanks for the solution. I thought problem was within SR3.
