Library 'n' Host Post

Good morning campers

IM CONNECTING THIS:
1 x A5585A. HP SureStore E Tape Library 4/40 HVDS
4 x A5589A. HVDS DLT-8000 Drives

TO THIS:
Compaq ProLiant DL580

I will need 4 x Host adapters
I will need 4 x 10-metre cables

QUESTIONS:
What part #'s & descriptions for adapters & cables?
I'm pretty sure this library will work under virtually any OS
Am I right?
Anything that I have to be careful about?

Mike "hardware connectivity makes me nervous" Fisher

P.S. Where's Harry? Kidnapped by Aliens?

Hey Mike!

What's the matter? No one wants to talk to you this morning?

If you were connecting this to a HP-UX box, you'd have people beating your door down with answers. In this case, I suppose it will work, but I'm not sure I would want my backup solution running on a platform of such quesitonable stability.

Re: Library 'n' Host Post

Pete

I'm gonna be walking 'round the office
Ringing a bell & shouting "unclean, unclean"

Someone's painted a big white x on my door
Outside I can hear a guy wheeling a barrow
He's shouting "bring out your dead, bring out your dead"
[Ref. The Lizard King. Mr. Mojo Risin' hisself]

Anyway I read in the papers that Harry has been sighted
Close to Brooklyn Bridge
With a BIG gun
Looking for anyone carrying cable cutters
[Haven't these guys got any technical know how?]

Re: Library 'n' Host Post

Mike,

Knowing Harry, that could very well be true. The last I heard from him, however, he was extremely busy with major projects at work: re-writing their payroll system, working on merging two recently acquired companies, some C programming, and some PERL scripting.

With that kink of load, I might be tempted to take up a big gun myself!

Later,

Pete

Re: Library 'n' Host Post

A few years ago, I had a similar configuration on a Sun system, but I don't know if my experience will apply. But, since you're apparently desperate for info, here's what I recall (so take this FWIW):

We put the robot on the internal Sun Scsi channel, and put two tape drives on each of two other FW/SCSI cards. The hardware was easy, and probably not much different than what you have. The library was heavier than one person could lift, so get help.

You have to be careful with SCSI addresses, termination and such. But AFAICT, your hardware plan is sound. Configuring the software is a bitch, however. But that wasn't your question..........

As far as I know, that system is still in use (after 4 years) with my previous employer.

Re: Library 'n' Host Post

I would go with 4 Adaptec AHA-2944UW. It's ok to mix the robot and 1 drive on one bus but each ACTIVE drive requires a dedicated SCSI bus so if you want to spin all 4 drives at the same time, you need 4 SCSI controllers.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Library 'n' Host Post

Hi Guys

I think that I've made a basic mistake
The DL580 requires that I supply an LVDS Library & not HVDS

Does any one know for sure?

Re: Library 'n' Host Post

That configuration will work but unfortunately is not officially supported from the Proliant side. Hopefully that can be corrected soon.

The problem is that there is no officially supported HVD HBA for the Proliant DL580. The Adapted 2944UW or any of the LSI logic HVD cards will work fine but are not "supported".

One option to make it work is the Paralan LVD-HVD convertor. That is an expensive option though and you could still get an agent that would claim you had an unsupported configuration.

The cables aren't a problem, any of the HP or Compaq 10 meter cables that are 68 pin HD at both ends will work. If you need part numbers I could dig them up but I'd just be looking on the same hp.com you would.
