Linux os won't recognize SCSI AIT 35 GB tape drive

I have been battling with communicating with a Compaq 35 GB SCSI external tape drive on our Compaq rack mounted server. Getting error ???fs type not supported by kernel??? when attempting to mount. Running Redhat 7.2. The tape drive is being recognized by SCSI bios during boot-up. Using tapeware software and mt and in all cases the system wont see tape drive. Verified that the tape drive module (st) is loaded in kernel. When using mt (mt ???f /dev/st0 erase) I get error message ???no such device.
