MSL 6000, error 206

Hello, I'm trying to figure out why we keep getting an retrospect error 206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.). I've cleaned the drive 4 times now, tried new tapes and made sure that the error was not generated from any of the client computers. How can I test the backup device, nothing is reported in the logs. Are any tests that I can run to make sure there is nothing wrong with the backup device.
