MSL2024 with 2 x LTO4 Ultrium 1760 SCSI drives

Hi,

My customer plans to have 2 x Ultrium 1760 drives for his MSL2024 and connect it to a N1200-320 4Gb NSR and then connect it to a SAN switch.

I've gone thru the Business class libraries drives upgrade matrix (ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/storageworks/techdoc/tapestorage/SW_MSL_Tape_Auto_bc_FINAL.hires_040808.pdf). It states that Ultrium 1760 SAS can be used on the MSL2024.

However, I see from the MSL2024 Quick Specs (http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13258_na/13258_na.pdf) that it supports the SCSI version as well.

This is confusing. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

There are two things I do not understand:

The N1200-320 is a card for MSL5000/6000 libraries. Are you going to connect the drives on the MSL2024 to this?

The NSR has SCSI connectors, so you can only connect a Ultrium SCSI drive. Yes, there are SAS (and FC) drives too, but cannot be used with a NSR.

Check this out: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/n12003204gnsr/index.html

It's an external NSR that can be mounted onto a rack. It basically connects the MSL2024 SCSI drives and the SAN switch together.

Ahps, sorry, confused it with the E1200-320.

It also has 2 SCSI connectors, so you need Ultrium drives with SCSI connectors.

Any comments on why you prefer the N1200-320 NSR instead of using native Fibre Channel drives?

As another posted said - if you want to use the NSR you have to have the parallel SCSI drive. SAS is not compatible with the NSR.

Re: MSL2024 with 2 x LTO4 Ultrium 1760 SCSI drives

Hi,

To answer your question:-

a) You cannot use SAS drives which NSR's.

b) NSR is a network storage router to convert FC to SCSI and vice versa hence you can use only SCSI Tape drives if you use an NSR.

c) Dont even worry about a NSR if you can get 2 Fibre Channel Tape drives which can be directly connected to the Fibre Channel Switch and can be accessed by the Backup Server.

Hope this helps.

Re: MSL2024 with 2 x LTO4 Ultrium 1760 SCSI drives

Hi,

Thanks everyone for the replies.

The reason why we chose to use the NSR is because we plan to use 2 half-height SCSI drives (Ultrium 1760) on the MSL2024. Hence we require the NSR to convert the SCSI connections into FC.

If we use FC drive for the MSL2024, we could only have 1 drive (but we want to have 2). I don't think MSL2024 can support 2 x FC drives because the FC drives are all full-height?

Coming back to my question, does the MSL2024 really support 2 x LTO4 Ultrium1760 SCSI drives? Cause the EBS matrix only says it supports SAS but the QuickSpecs says there is SCSI option available.

Thanks :)

It is definitely supported and is on the EBS Matrix as well..

See page 12..
