MSL5000 firmware upgrade

1. is MSL5000Util.exe still usefull for firmware update?
If yes, how to get it, and where to download *.bin file?

2. on web, LTT is prefered now for firmware updating.
Is it better than MSL5000Util.exe?
Is there some known problems?

3. Firmware ubdate with MSL5000Util (or LTT) update whole lirary unit firmware or DLT drive firmware only?

Thank you

Re: MSL5000 firmware upgrade

Marek,
LTT should be ok. I believe it's more powerful than that utility you mentioned. Did not hear about problems. Firmware files are obtained by LTT from HP ftp site automatically (go to 'Get files from web..'). I remember LTT was asking which devices to update before updating (changer and even which drive in the library).
You can try using LTT. Be sure it will not update until you'll press 'big UPDATE' button :o)

Re: MSL5000 firmware upgrade

We recently upgraded our MSL5030 firmware. As the network to which the library is attached has no external access, we were not able to use LTT. (Maybe you can download the updates seperately, but we didnt bother investigating this.)

We upgraded the firmware through the web interface to the library. This process took about 3 minutes; apparently using MSL5000Util.exe is painfully slower. (Does that count as a known problem? ;o)

IIRC the library firmware also contains the drive firmware.

BTW our local friendly HP engineer provided the 4.08 firmware (and the 4.04 firmware that the library shipped with when we thought we had to rollback). Cant seem to find the firmware download page....

Re: MSL5000 firmware upgrade

Can anyone answer 1)??? Where do you get the *.bin file updates? Are they the same as the *.frm updates? Where are the download links?

Thanks.

PS When are HP going to fix this mess they call a website?

Re: MSL5000 firmware upgrade

Dear All,
I have a problem : How to Upgrade FW for MSL6060 wich is connected to a Sun Solaris system??

Please reply to both of my E-Mail Adresses :

suzanne_seif@cis.com.lb
Here below the details of the problem.
We would like to upgrade the firmware of the whole tape library, including robot, drives and the SCSI-FC router.
We are today on revision 4.14 for the library, F38W on the drives and 4.03.24 on the router.

The latest available for the library is 4.21.
For the drives it is F43W.
And for the router it is 5.01.04.

As I have downloaded the firmware bundle, I can only
see *.frm files, and not at documented in the manual *.bin and *.dlx files.
As the StorageWorks library tool is not available on Solaris, we can not use it to extract the *.bin and *.dlx files?

Is there a way that HP can provide us the actual *.bin and *.dlx files?
I could then use ftp or the web interface to manually upload the firmware as documented in the manuals.

We need this urgently as our backup software vendor has recommended us to upgrade before putting the libraries into production environment.

Here are the details;

to Ben:

as I know, HP does not make the bin-Files available, so you have to use LTT only.

Re: MSL5000 firmware upgrade

Hi,
You could always install LT&T on a machine with internet access and download the required files, burn them to CD and put them in the firmware directory on the server not connected to the internet.

Re: MSL5000 firmware upgrade

> Can anyone answer 1)??? Where do you get the *.bin file updates? ... Where are the download links?

HP currently does not distribute the .bin files, although they are made available to HP customer engineers and service providers.

We (HP) are considering whether to make these available on the external web.

> Are they the same as the *.frm updates?

No, the .frm files include a header used by HP L&TT to identify the firmware. Other utilities (e.g. MSLUTIL & the web interface) currently do not recognize this header.
The journey IS the reward.
