MSL5060 tape drives failing

I have an MSL5060 tape Library the drives keep on failing spontaneously. In two weeks three drives have failed, replaced one of them. However, the drives are not having any error LED on them, they are just failing from the Data protector side. All the FW is latest for all the Drives, NSR and Library. The LTT tool can see all the drives with ease.

Please advice

Re: MSL5060 tape drives failing

Hi Kamaranzi ,

What errors do you get when you try to use the drive?

Also check if the drive is connected properly to the system.
Is it a SCSI connection ??
Check if the SCSI terminator is connected properly or not.

Re: MSL5060 tape drives failing

Hi,

Does the SCSI terminator connected properly?
We had an recent instance where the BACKUPs here failing because of the improper connection of SCSI terminator.
Refer the below link for more details.

Re: MSL5060 tape drives failing

Hullo,

Will check that as well, i have reconnected, swapped the terminators and cables but lTT can see all drives and the MSL passes all the tests but when from the OS device files you can clearly see that one of the drives does not have proper device files.

Re: MSL5060 tape drives failing

Is that drive at the same FW level as the other drives?

Re: MSL5060 tape drives failing

Regarding the device files I would suggest to remove them (rmsf -k -H ...) and re-create them.

Consider to do an assessment test with LTT and pull a support ticket from there.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
