MSL6000 Sense Code 04, Sense Qualifier 01
We have a HP MSL6000 tape library with a single drive connected via SCSI to an Ubuntu 7.04 server running Amanda.
This is our live backup server and has been in production for over a year.
In the amanda logs, I can see that a request to move a completed tape from the drive back to the slot, with a view to loading the next tape, failed. Logs below:
06:28:48 SEARCH -> Hunting for label "QKH862"
-> barcode is "QKH862L2"
-> foundslot is 3
06:28:49 LOADSLOT -> load drive 0 (/dev/tape/by-id/scsi-350060b00002b1732-nst) from slot 3
06:28:49 STATUS -> currently loaded slot = 2
-> currently loaded barcode = "QKH861L2"
06:28:49 EJECT -> ejecting tape from /dev/tape/by-id/scsi-350060b00002b1732-nst
06:28:49 STATUS -> currently loaded slot = 2
-> currently loaded barcode = "QKH861L2"
06:28:49 EJECT -> moving tape from drive 0 to storage slot 2
06:28:49 Running: /usr/sbin/mtxRunning: unloadRunning: 2Running: 0
06:33:50 Exit code: 1
Stderr:
Unloading Data Transfer Element into Storage Element 2...mtx: Request Sense: Long Report=yes
mtx: Request Sense: Valid Residual=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error Code=70 (Current)
mtx: Request Sense: Sense Key=Not Ready
mtx: Request Sense: FileMark=no
mtx: Request Sense: EOM=no
mtx: Request Sense: ILI=no
mtx: Request Sense: Additional Sense Code = 04

mtx: Request Sense: BPV=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error in CDB=no
mtx: Request Sense: SKSV=no
MOVE MEDIUM from Element Address 480 to 33 Failed
As a result backups are failing to tape (and staying on the holding disk, as amanda does ..)
mtx is reporting a very similar output, rather than a map of where the tapes current are, I get the following output:
# mtx -f /dev/tape/by-id/scsi-200900d2652453476 status
mtx: Request Sense: Long Report=yes
mtx: Request Sense: Valid Residual=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error Code=70 (Current)
mtx: Request Sense: Sense Key=Not Ready
mtx: Request Sense: FileMark=no
mtx: Request Sense: EOM=no
mtx: Request Sense: ILI=no
mtx: Request Sense: Additional Sense Code = 04
mtx: Request Sense: Additional Sense Qualifier = 01
mtx: Request Sense: BPV=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error in CDB=no
mtx: Request Sense: SKSV=no
READ ELEMENT STATUS Command Failed
The mtx inquiry command gives the following:
# mtx -f /dev/tape/by-id/scsi-200900d2652453476 inquiry
Product Type: Medium Changer
Vendor ID: 'HP '
Product ID: 'MSL6000 Series '
Revision: '0430'
Attached Changer: No
The Tape Library is at our datacentre and has not been power cycled since I have worked here (just over a year). I can get remote hands to power cycle, but before I do I thought I would seek advise.
Thanks,
Mark

If the management card is not connected or you don't know the IP, get someone on the data center to do the same from the library touch screen.

Re: MSL6000 Sense Code 04, Sense Qualifier 01
I managed to visit the DC this morning and found a message on the LCD screen similar to 'Error: Unload Timed Out', pressing OK brought up another error similar to 'Error: Eject Failed', pressing OK returned the screen to normal.
At this point I was able to query the library with mtx and unload/load tapes.
Amanda now flushing :)
Thanks all,
Mark
