MSL6000 front panel msg: "Magazine type changed"

It goes on to say

"Some of the inserted magazines (lower right) are of a different type than the ones removed.

Leaving these magazines in the library will cause its geometry to change.

Press OK to reconfigure and reboot, press CANCEL to replace magazine."

We only have 4 magazines- the four that came with the library- and they all look the same to me...

Here's how it usually goes:
>Check libray in the afternoon before going home, no panel message, all is well.
>Come in the next morning to find that some overnight backup tapes failed. DataProtector log shows "Cannot open exchanger control device (Unit is not ready.)"
>Check MSL6000 front panel, get "Magazine type changed" message.

Now today the message popped up in the middle of the afternoon. Everything worked fine this morning, andwe haven't touched the library in 5 hours, but the message is there.

Any ideas?

Re: MSL6000 front panel msg: "Magazine type changed"

First advise in the manuals regarding the magazine is always: "Upgrade to a newer firmware, if available". What version you are running?

Hope this helps!

Re: MSL6000 front panel msg: "Magazine type changed"

HP came over yesterday and we just used Library Tape & Tools to update everything.

The message has been popping up from time to time for over a month now, both before and after the firmware update.

Any idea how the machine senses the magazine type? Far as I can tell, the magazine doesn't have a barcode or any identifying marks on it...

Re: MSL6000 front panel msg: "Magazine type changed"

The magazines for DLT/SDLT and LTO are different and sensed via an optical sensor *under* the magazines. The problem could be there. Just use try to use the lower magazines in the upper slot (and vice versa) and observe.

Hope this helps!

In other words: a bad sensor is not that unlikely.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I see the sensor you are talking about. That gives us a place to start.

Thanks.

More to come...

Points have been assigned (I think - new here).

Re: MSL6000 front panel msg: "Magazine type changed"

Hi Jasen,

Hardware: MSL 5026S2 (SDLT Lib)
I have similar problem, I have updated the firmware of Library to v.5.13 but problem repeated after two weeks that left side magazine type changed to LTO instead of DLT.

I have already replaced the control panel board. Still problem repeated after two weeks.Currently I have disconnect the LTO sensor connection from control panel board.

I don't suspect sensor bcoz, whenenver I disconnect the LTO sensor it sens magazine as DLT, after I connect back it still shows DLT for some time. after two weeks problem repeats.

Can any assist on this issue?

Re: MSL6000 front panel msg: "Magazine type changed"

HP was onsite and found a loose connector where the sensor wire meets the sensor control board.

So that should do it, but time will tell...
