MSL6030 Error 3111

Last nights backup went wild and we had an error displayed "Fault code 3111 (Hard) Picker Retries Excd. 1"

We do not have a pass through on this library! LOL

There was an orphaned cartridge recovered and stowed in Bin 15 which made us wonder what "really" went wrong overnight? We only had 4 tapes in the library to begin with in sequential mode...

We had to re-boot to get the library back in service and get the tapes out for the next rotation.

The bios on the MSL6030 is 0421 so I have the latest picker and shuttle fixes.

So, before I send off the log through the L&TT..., my question to the forum is what could have caused the library to goof up and orphan a cartridge like that? What could have caused the library to do a diag check for a pass through mechanism when the library knows there isn't one? Anyone ever see happen this before?

The error code 3111 has the following error recovery procedure:
(1) Cycle power the library using the power option on the GUI touch screen, wait 30 seconds then power up again.
(2) Call Technical Support if happens again.

I didn't catch where the error referred to a PTM.

If you can generate an LTT support ticket and post it, we can review the error logs.

Sneaky... just saw the 4.23 bios update posted...

Is this a fix for this?

No, I don't think the 4.23 change is the fix.

The "retries exceeded" means it picker tried to place the cartridge into a slot/drive and could not. It uses an alogorithm where it tries at a few different position offsets before it gives up. One possible cause is that one of the magizines is not fully seated. We found one case where there was some cable interference.

Have you power-cycled the library after the failure? If not, then the firmware trace might still have some history we can review. Otherwise, we'll review the logs and if that doesn't provide enough insight, capture the firmware trace after any subsequent failure.

I assume you not using any side labels on the tapes that could cause load problems.

FYI, HP doesn't officially support the use of "sequential" mode, but it shouldn't cause this type of failure.

No "Official Support" for sequential mode, eh? hahaha (bios 4.21 gave us all the sequential mode fix we needed)

Which trace file do I pull from the library to send to you?
