My customer has installed MSL6030 (scsi, 1 drive) and DataProtector 5.1.
Him reclaim that the library performances are 3 times slow (10 MB/s instead of 30 MB/s) than the normal.
The backup environment is:
3 Win2000 server (fileserver,CAD)
2 Unix server
total amount of backed up files: about 3 Milions.
The library was installed with factory defaults, none was changed.
Someone has any idea or any test ?
thanks to all
regards Davide

Re: MSL6030 low performance
There are two performance test tools.
Device perf - will test the write speed of the tape drives.
Sys perf - will test the rate that data can be pulled from your disks.

SolutionI am not surprised, I guess the limitations is in the disksystems and/or the fileservers and/or the network. It is very hard to get max. performance out of a Ultrium 2 drive if you back up millions of rather small files. You need exstremly fast disk systems, fileservers and GBit network. Or, you have to do disk image backups.

Re: MSL6030 low performance
- with T&LL tool, the library performances
are near to declared (90 / 100 GB/h)
- defragmenting the disks of backup clients
backup time is decreased from 9 to 5 hours
- backing up about 1000 files with dimension
of 10 MB or more, backup speed was about
60 GB/h
- increasing the DataProtector processes from 4 to 5, general performances are a little bit improved.
- increasing DataProtector processes to 32, DP has crashed
Any idea about these results ?
thanks

Re: MSL6030 low performance
I still suspect the limitations is with the disk/filesystem , not with DP or the tape library.
What kind of disk system are you using (SAN, local, hardware RAID, model) ?
Do you backup the clients via a SAN or LAN ?
Was the 60 GB/h a Windows or Unix client, is there any differences in performance WIndows/Unix ?

Re: MSL6030 low performance
Clients are backed up via 1Gbps LAN.
60 GB/h are obtained with Windows clients.
There are no relevant differences between Windows and Unix systems.
