Mechanical Block
We have a new (about 2 months old) HP 1/8 G2 Ultrium 448 Autloader. It has been working fine for about two months. I now have an error message on it:
Mechanical Block Code 8D 07.
The shipping lock has been removed - which is the only suggestion I've been able to find.
I am very frustrated with HP "support" and am hoping that someone on this forum can help me. I tried calling the HP support line (which says it is available 24/7) and got a message telling me to call back during normal business hours which are 8:00 - 8:00 Eastern time. It's now about 5:00 p.m. Atlantic time - which should be within "normal business hours". So then I tried to email their support and got this message:
"Dear Customer,
Thank you for emailing HP.
Please note: At this moment we have an issue with this Mail System, your mail cannot reach the Support teams . Should you need technical support for an HP product, we recommend using one of the following alternatives:
Visit the HP Business Support Centre to find manuals, technical documentation, software and driver downloads: http://www.hp.com/emea/bizsupport
Use HP Instant Support to chat with a support agent: http://h50203.www5.hp.com/hpisweb/customer/HPInstantsupport.aspx
Contact HP by phone http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/wwcontact_us.html
This is an automatically generated message. Please do not reply to this e-mail.
Yours Sincerely,
HP Global Delivery, Technology Services"

Re: Mechanical Block
the 8D/07 code does mean a mechanical block - i.e., something is preventing the picker assembly from moving. There are several things that can cause that but they all are some form of blockage. One I've seen a few times is moving the library with tapes installed and one slips out of it's slot and blocks the picker. Use the emergency release holes in the bottom corners of the drive back plate to insert a pin and release the magazines and look for anything that might have falling in the middle of the library. Take all of the tapes out so there is no question of anything hitting and then put the magazines back in and turn the library back on. If you're really cleaver you can find the magazine sensor and trip it so the library will try to power up without the magazines and you can watch to see where it gets stuck.
You can also post a library support ticket here from L&TT or the web interface and we can find out more information from that.
