Media tape migration from SDLT to LTO5
Hi Folks,
We have an inventory of 2000+ SDLT tapes, as you know SDLT was discontinued years ago, and operations wants to migrate the old media to LTO5 tapes.
We are using CA BrightStore, MSL6026 (SDLT) and MSL4048 (LTO5)
Please may you help us with some advice?
Thanks in advance!
A.

Re: Media tape migration from SDLT to LTO5
Hi,
There are 2 ways to do this.
1. the most easy if this exist in CA is to copy - clone the tapes.
Meaning, you load the SDLT tapes in an SDLT drive and copy - clone them to LTO 5.
I have very little expiriance with CA brightstore so i am not sure if an option like this exist.
2. More difficult and time consuming.
Restore the data on the SDLT tape to a disk, and rebackup them to LTO 5 tapes.

Re: Media tape migration from SDLT to LTO5
one key thing to note:
if you do a straight, bit by bit copy of the tape, you will end up with a lot of unused space on your new LTO-5 tapes.
The key is that you do an object copy whereby CA copies the backup objects from one media to the next. in that way, CA will be able to fill up the LTO-5 and you will be able to do better space consolidation.
