My hp dds-4 40GB data cartridge tape can contain only 20GB

I don't know what is wrong with my 40GB tape (Model : C5718A), it can store data only up to 20GB.

Hi Dara, we need a little more information here. O/S, Backup software, what kind of data, etc. For starters, depending on your O/S, download HP Storageworks Library and Tape Tools diagnostic from this site,and using the "test" feature, you can select "compression test" from the drop down menu. This will at least tell you if the drive is compressing properly.

OS is windows NT Server 4.0. I use the built-in backup utility from Windows NT and the data that i backup is ordinary files like MS word, Excel, acrobat and these files are store on network share on another file server.
