NEED NEW TAPE LIBRARY

Here is our set up. We currently backup approximately 180 GB worth of data a day. Most of which is patient medical records, lots of images. We are currently using an ALT Powerstore L20. This holds 6 40/80GB DLT tapes. This will definitely need to be updated this year and was wondering if you have any suggestions on a good alternative for around $8,000.00.

Thanks,
Kate

Hi Kate,

You have to give much more information, like:
- is this one server where all the data is on?
- what backup software do you use?
- are there any backup/restore window restrictions.
etc..

To be honest...$8,000.00 isn't much in backup-country.

Re: NEED NEW TAPE LIBRARY

Hi,

The StorageWorks 1/8 Ultrium Autoloader fit your budget.
http://www.smb.compaq.com/ctoBases.asp?oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=&ProductLineId=450&FamilyId=1535&LowBaseId=7308&LowPrice=$2,505.00

With 8 Ultrium cartridges it will store about 3 times more then your cutrrent DLT autoloader.

If you don't want to switch tape tecnology then HP don't seem to have any good alternative. The StorageWorks 1016 uses DLT1 drives which is rather slow and can't use DLT medias which have been used in a DLT 8000 drive before (unless bulk erased first). If you want to go on with DLT 8000, have a look at Overland PowerLoader.

Re: NEED NEW TAPE LIBRARY

Hi Kate, I have found that the ultrium is incredibly fast at backing up and that the actual drive seems to have long periods of waiting for the data to be sent from the server. Definitely worth going for
