NTbackup cant find tape drive periodicly

We have several Win2k machines all using the default DDT driver. After a while NTbackup fails and when you try to perform a backup manually it comes back with an error "cannot detect selected backup device". Upon re booting the system it works fine for a while but eventually dies. I would automatically suspect hardware if this wasn't happening on all of our Windows 2000 servers.
