Problem of slow perf + I/O errors on HPUX11.11 + HPDataProtector 5.1

Dear community,

I have to deal right now with a problem of slow performance + I/O errors + frequent cleanings on a solution which involves ADIC Scalar i2000, HP-UX 11.11 on HP Server , Data Protector 5.1

a customer is having identical problem on 2 mirror sites (same configuration):

CONFIGURATION

ADIC HW Details :
I2K
5 x LTO2 Drive, FW = 42D1

SAN details
FC attachment to 2 x Brocades Switches
Fabric A : Brocade3850 ( firmware: v 3.1.2 )
Fabric B : Brocade3800 ( firmware : v 4.2.0.b )

HBA:
A6795A

Server / OS / driver tape:
N4000 / HP-UX 11.0 / atdd 1.15.0.3.
HP RP3440 / 11.11 / recent atdd version

Software:
HP Data protector 5.1

Medias:
Data: IMATION LTO2
Cleaning: FUJI

PROBLEM
- Very Slow performance : around 8-10 MB/s instead of normal LTO2 perf.
- Random I/O errors on all Drives.
- Drives asking for cleaning with a quite high frequency.

QUESTIONS:
Since the problem is present on both sites, no real doubts can reside on ADIC hardware. The problem should be somewhere with:
- SAN
- HP OS patches
- HBA settings
- HP Data Protector Tuning
- media….

Does anybody have return about IMATION LTO2 tapes ?

Does anybody have experience on tuning HP-UX OS and HP Data protector to get nicer performance on LTO2 ?

Any feedback from anybody who already worked in such environment will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any return,

Cosmicso

The frequent cleanings make me think you have a bad bunch of tapes. I would try buying some high-quality tapes (such as genuine HP tapes), and see if that makes a difference.

Poor tapes could explain the performance as well.

Anybody else have any ideas?

Cosmic Soul,

The cleaning frequency of LTO2 tapes should rather be once a year. It depends of course on how regular you use the drives, but make sure that you don't have a HW problem with the drives.

The block size DP uses is 128 kb by default. You could increase it to 256 kb to gain performance, but the difference in performance won't be too drastic.

In an online backup of Oracle (so large database files) on HPUX11i to HP Ultrium2, I've reach a througput of max. 3 GB/minute (really large database files) and an average of 2 GB/minute. Which isn't too bad.
