RE: HELP!!!!!!

Hi,

Basically, when i run scheduled backups the library only writes to one tape then fails, disabling the other tape drive and throws up some of the errors listed below.

SYSTEM LOG

APPLICATION LOG

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Networker
Event Category: Media
Event ID: 1
Date: 17/11/2005
Time: 10:59:56
User: N/A
Computer: RBKUP
Description:
NetWorker media: (warning) \\.\Tape0 moving: tape_rewind rewind failed: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. (268436573)

Although the two scheduled backups seemed to sort of run ok (but only after networker has unconfused itself.) (I.e. disabling drives and stating that a 40/80 GB tape is suddenly "full", when it states in "volumes" that there is barely 1 GB of information on the tape and also throwing up all the various errors regarding I/O as detailed in the daemon log.)

I am using Networker 7.2 on Win2k. I have recently had tape drive and controllers replaced and all firmware is upto date.

Any help would be grately appreciated.

Re: RE: HELP!!!!!!

Hi Phil,

Verify that you have most up to date SCSI controller driver installed. And since the firmware update you may want to reload the tape drive driver. Judging from the source of the first error you're getting, you have the HP drivers installed. I'm not familiar with the Networker back-up utility. You may need to look into this as most back-up software do have their own drivers for tape devices, and prefer to have those drivers loaded.

This kind of error is usually indicative of communications problems. If the tape drive has a hardware issue it will likely fail right away at the beginning if a job. When a job fails part way through a job this usually means that something has happened to interrupt the data stream to the drive.

To ensure proper communication please ensure that most recent drivers are installed. All firmware is up to date. And also ensure that the cables being used have no bent pins, or appear broken at all.

You can also use HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools to run some diagnostics on the library and drives. You can download this utility from www.hp.com/support/lttdownload.

Hope this helps.

Re: RE: HELP!!!!!!

How many tapes have you used on the tape drive? Almost sounds like it might be a bad tape.

Re: RE: HELP!!!!!!

Jacob and Andy,

Thanks for your help guys.

Andy. I'm beginning to think you may be right and this could be the case on a few tapes.

I'm in the process of re-labelling all the tapes, then i'll try a couple of scheduled backups and let you know how it went.

Cheers,
Phil
