Restore sequence

I've been trying to figure out the logic to this restoring sequence. can someone shed some light on this. I am not trying to make short cuts but logically it doesn't make sense.

Tips and Tricks from Data Protector Express User's Guide and Technical Reference:

--//"Suppose in this example that the last full backup was done on Friday evening and that incremental
jobs were run on Monday and Tuesday evenings. To restore the volume as it appeared on Wednesday
morning, follow these steps.
a. Create a restore job, give it an identifying name, select the appropriate volume and then set the
Backup range to Friday’s date.
b. Copy the first restore job, rename it with an identifying name and change the Backup range date
to match Monday’s date. Repeat this step, changing the Backup range date of this third job to
Tuesday’s date.
c. Run the three jobs, being certain to run them in the correct order." --//

Q:
Why couldn't you do the friday's full backup and then do the Tuesday's backup to be able to restore Wednesday's volume. Why do you need to do Monday's Backup if it will already appear in Tuesday's backup????

P.S. This thread has been moved from Data Protector Support and News Forum to Tape Backup (Small and Medium Business).

Re: Restore sequence

Hi, the key here is "incremental jobs". If the backups were done in an incremental (and not differential) way, you need to restore the full copy and all backups after that.

Incremental:

Backup 1 (Friday) = full copy (base)
Backup 2 (Monday) = Monday - Friday
Backup 3 (Tuesday) = Tuesday - Monday

Differential:

Backup 1 (Friday) = full copy (base)
Backup 2 (Monday) = Monday - Friday
Backup 3 (Tuesday) = Tuesday - Friday

Look close at the difference and think it for a while
