SDLT vs LTO

I'm looking to purchase a tape drive for an HP 9000 rp3440 server to do Ignite-UX backups and periodic Oracle database archives. Is it recommended to use SDLT or LTO tapes/drives? What is preferred (more stable/reliable)?

Re: SDLT vs LTO

Hi,

Technically, either medium should serve you well.

However given Quantum's admission that DLT is essentially dead, I'd probably go with LTO...

Hope this helps,

Re: SDLT vs LTO

Hi,

LTO is the more advanced technology, but only for ignite backups it may be oversized.

If you want to use a tape drive for ignite backups only, have a look at DDS tape drives, but for database backups I would choose a LTO.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: SDLT vs LTO

LTO by far has the highest marketshare in that space and thus is the defacto industry standard.

For your purpose I would choose a half height model which are cheaper, a little slower but fully compatible with the full height models.

You can choose between Ultrium 232, Ultrium 448 and Ultrium 920 with 100, 200 and 400GB native capacity per cartridge.
