SLES 9.0 DAT 72 HOT PLUG DL 380 G4 compression failed

My server is Proliant DL 380 G4

S. O SLES 9.0

Tape backup Dat 72 hot plug..........

When I run the command tar -f /dev/st0 datcompression

compression on

But when I run tar cvf /dev/st0 and the backup size is 60 Gb the backup need anorther tape....

Please help me ?

Hello Antonio,
The DAT72 product has a capacity of 72GB when the data being backed up is compressed at 2:1. (Native capacity is 36GB).
It may be that your data is not very compressible therfore you are filling your tape earlier than 72GB.
In order to check that compression is working you can install HP Library and tape tools for Linux, available here:

Do a backup then pull a "support ticket" from the drive. In the text of the support ticket (near the end) you will find the compression acheived by the drive. If this is anything other than 1, then you are getting compression. If it is exactly 1 then it sounds like compression has been disabled for some reason and further investigation will be required.
